Front-End Tipping Cylinder: Operation, Selection and Tipper Use

A front-end tipping cylinder is a hydraulic cylinder mounted just behind the cab (at the front of the body) on a tipper truck or trailer that raises the body from the front to dump the load. Most models are multi-stage telescopic: closed length stays short while stroke is long, giving a high tip angle.

Searches for “front-end tipping cylinder” and “tipping cylinder” usually mean buying and matching. This guide covers working principle, stage selection, difference from underbody lift and how to choose the right product.

How Does a Front-End Tipping Cylinder Work?

  1. The PTO takes power from the gearbox; a gear pump pressurises the oil.
  2. The tipping valve directs oil to the cylinder.
  3. Oil opens the stages in sequence from the outermost; the rod/barrel extends.
  4. The body rises from the front; the load dumps at the rear.
  5. On lowering, oil returns to the tank in a controlled way; stages close in sequence.

Force depends on working pressure and stage diameter. On typical tippers the pressure band varies by maker; Özceylanlar offers about 190 bar class solutions in its front-end ranges. Full system: Hydraulic System · Tipper Hydraulic Kit.

Front-End vs Underbody

Front-end tipping cylinder

Underbody cylinder

Position

Behind cab / front of body

Between chassis and body

Typical build

3–6 stage telescopic

Telescopic or horizontal/scissor layout

Advantage

High angle, common, visible for service

Lower centre of gravity on some trailers

Watch

Mounting height, number of stages

Geometry, chassis strength

On construction and general tipper trucks front-end is the most common choice. Trailers and special bodies may use underbody. General telescopic info: What Is a Telescopic Cylinder?.

How to Choose the Right Front-End Tipping Cylinder

  1. Body length and volume (m³): Sets stroke and stage count.
  2. Load type and tonnage: Sand/rubble vs rock need different safety margins.
  3. Required tip angle: Critical for complete emptying.
  4. Closed length: Must fit the cab–body mounting space.
  5. Working pressure: Must match pump and tipping valve.
  6. Oil volume: Tank and pump flow must cover the cylinder’s oil need.
  7. Mounting type: Eye, clevis, flange — per chassis bracket.
  8. Welding and test certificates: On welded cylinders, documents such as ISO 3834-2 build confidence.

Common Front-End Tipping Cylinder Problems

  • Body rises slowly: Low flow, wrong PTO ratio, worn gear pump, air ingress.
  • Stage sequence wrong / sticking: Internal leakage, dirty oil, skewed mounting.
  • Oil leak: Worn seals, rod scratches, port fitting.
  • Vibration: Excessive speed, wrong valve setting, loose mounting.
  • Does not reach full angle: Stroke too short or mechanical stop/setting.
